Introduction to Phantom Load

Phantom Load (or Standby Power) is the consumption of electricity by appliances or technology when they are not currently in use. Studies show that this Phantom Load or Standby Power can make up to 10% of a household’s total energy consumption.

What is the Phantom Load in my household?

There are many devices in your home that may be affecting your electrical usage. By design, many devices are in a power state between on and off, waiting for a command or just keeping time on an internal clock. This standby state lets devices wake up quicker and perform their duty with limited wait. For example, think about modern television. In many instances, you will find that a television is put into rest mode between uses so that it can start quickly when somebody tries to turn it on. Another example is a laptop that is still plugged in after it is fully charged. Even though your device is fully powered, the charger is still sending electricity to it.

What can I do about Phantom Load?

The idea of phantom load may bother you, but it is not all bad. You must consider the convenience of having devices ready to go at a moment’s notice. Many smart devices today use a standby mode so they can activate their features at your command. If you were to unplug these devices, these features would no longer work.

If you do have concerns, then you can always unplug some of your technology or appliances to reduce the amount of electricity used. This helps lower your electricity bill and reduces your environmental impact. Consider using power-saving/energy-efficient modes to limit your electrical usage, which can extend device lifespan and further save money. You may also consider buying energy-efficient devices or using a smart power strip to conveniently control appliances, helping to reduce waste and cost.

Remember that it is all about balance and finding what is convenient for your own budget and time. Everybody’s situation is different, and it is all about what you are comfortable with using.
